Ben and Yannick converted it into a foundation and museum in 1993. The original structure was transformed in the following years into a complex covering some 1500 sqm on a property of 160,000 sqm, on which no further construction of any kind is allowed, the property being located in a specially protected area designated as ANEI [Natural Area of Special Interest], between the mountains and the sea. The museum has been systematically improved since then, in an effort to acquire pieces of art that would enhance the museum’s collections.

The museum does not focus on the figures of its founders, but on what their eyes and hearts have wanted to share and preserve.

Msbb is a unique, possibly eclectic but coherent museum, comprising:

The Nins collection, housed in an underground space, a former water tank, where, in order to increase the intensity of the experience and create the best possible viewing conditions, only about 30% of a collection of 160 portraits of children, mostly belonging to European royalty and nobility, by masters of painting from the 16th to the early 19th centuries, is on display.

A sculpture park with 50 pieces; monumental representations of animals in granite or bronze, each referring to a specific culture, as well as a gigantic megalithic ellipse. An area that the architects consider to be ‘the fourth space’, through which the public can wander.

SOKRATES, an exhibition space that was added later, similar to a crypt, intended as a nod to the Sir John Soane Museum, guided by the ideas of Jean-Hubert Martin and inspired by Axel Vervoordt. Here, against the backdrop of the immense Swarovski crystal curtain, we present a dialogue between civilisations and continents: Nepal, Africa, Papua New Guinea and Australia are juxtaposed with modern masters Miquel Barceló, Rebecca Horn, Domenico Gnoli and Louise Bourgeois, among others. In addition, and as the cherry on the cake, the room dedicated to James Turrell. This wunderkammer is not necessarily intended to impart any historical information about art, but rather to create a visual and sensual experience of the collections and to personally enrich the visitor.

The legendary Hassan Fathy building, the spaces of which are dedicated to displaying art: again, making an effort to mix perspectives, from contemporary African art to Western art, with works by artists such as Brice Marden, Domenico Gnoli, Henri Michaux, and Vu Cao Dam, among others. The intermingling of art from different periods has been done with deliberate provocation, including works by those artists who have historically been ignored or overlooked. As a finishing touch, the old bedroom is covered entirely with 15th century polychrome wood: a Mudejar coffered ceiling from the Aragonese town of Tarazona, in Spain.

In recent years, an important collection of Aboriginal art has been established in dialogue with artists from Essaouira.

A short hike up the mountain leads to the Observatory, a lookout point with beautiful views of the Bay of Alcudia, where there is a Camera Obscura and a mirror installation entitled ‘Aquarium’.

Our spaces had certain constraints, but despite these, we have endeavoured to create ‘a friendly home’, with simplicity and integrity for the enjoyment of art, in the way Louis Kahn expected a museum to be: not overwhelmingly monumental, and of a scale relative to the scale of the collections on display.

This has been an ongoing process, certainly not planned from the beginning, and since Knud Jensen’s initiative in Louisiana, it is no longer taboo for a museum to reflect the personality and ideas of the founders. The fusion of old and new art, archaeological elements and contemporary art in a deliberately eclectic presentation echoes Picasso: ‘There is no past and no future in art’.

Visiting our museum requires no great knowledge of culture or history, which is why a Papua New Guinean artefact shares the same aesthetic language as a Louise Bourgeois, enabling not just one point of reference, but many.

On the island of Mallorca, a 50-minute drive from Palma, the capital, and on the shores of the Bay of Alcudia stands Msbb, Museo sa Bassa Blanca, which, more than just a museum like any city museum, is a ‘campus’ that aspires to be a place of artistic contemplation and spatial aesthetics, like other institutions […]

["post-349","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.0 -
